Privacy Policy

01Information we collect

• Account information. When you create an account, we collect your email address, a display name if you choose to set one, and — if you sign in with Google or Apple — your name and email as shared by that provider.
• Audio you record. When you use the mic to identify a recitation or practice Tajweed, the app processes that audio to match it against Quran verses and, for Tajweed practice, to assess pronunciation. Audio may be processed on-device or, where needed, sent to a speech-recognition service for transcription. We do not keep the recording. It is used to produce a transcript for that request and is not retained afterwards or stored against your account. What we keep is derived from it — the verse that matched, and counts such as how many characters were transcribed — never the audio itself.
• Recitation and usage history. We store the verses you look up (surah, ayah, and timestamp) so they appear in your Bookmarks, along with your daily activity, streaks, verse progress, any khatma reading plans you create (including the name you give a plan), and daily usage totals (listening time and Tajweed checks) used to apply free-tier limits.
• Purchase information. If you subscribe to Premium, the App Store or Google Play processes the transaction and provides a purchase record so we can activate your subscription. We store your subscription status, plan, renewal date, and the store's transaction identifier. We never see or store your payment card details — Apple and Google handle billing directly.
• Device information. So you can see where your account is signed in and sign a device out remotely, we store a device identifier, the device model, platform, app version, and when it was last active.
• Diagnostics and crash reports. We collect crash reports and basic performance data — app version, platform, and how long an operation took — to find and fix faults, and to tell whether verse recognition is working properly.

02How we use it

• To identify the surah and ayah being recited and show you the matching text, translation, and audio.
• To save your recitation history to Bookmarks and track your daily free-tier usage.
• To evaluate Tajweed practice recordings and give you feedback.
• To activate and maintain your Premium subscription.
• To show you the devices your account is signed in on, and to let you sign one out remotely.
• To diagnose crashes and monitor whether recognition and purchases are working.
• To operate, secure, and improve the app.

03Third parties we work with

• Supabase — our backend provider, for authentication, database storage, and account data.
• Google and Apple — if you choose to sign in with either, they authenticate you and share basic profile info (name, email) with us.
• Apple App Store and Google Play — process Premium subscription payments and tell us when a subscription is started, renewed, cancelled, or refunded; we never handle your card details directly.
• A speech-recognition provider (currently OpenAI) — may process recitation audio on our behalf to produce a transcript. It is processed for that request only; neither we nor the provider retain it as part of your account.
• Google Firebase Crashlytics — collects crash reports and diagnostic data on our behalf so we can find and fix faults.

We do not sell your data, and we do not use your recitation audio or history for advertising.

04Your choices

• Delete your account. Open Samaa and go to Settings → Delete Account to erase your account and its data immediately, or see how to delete your account for the full detail, including how to request deletion by email if you no longer have the app installed.
• Access your data. Email us at hello@samaaapp.com to request a copy of the data we hold about you.
• Microphone access. You can revoke microphone permission at any time — on iPhone or iPad in Settings → Samaa, and on Android in Settings → Apps → Samaa → Permissions. Recognition and practice features won't work without it; the rest of the app will.
• Manage or cancel Premium. On iPhone or iPad, Settings → [your name] → Subscriptions. On Android, the Google Play app → your profile icon → Payments and subscriptions → Subscriptions. Deleting your Samaa account does not cancel your subscription — cancel it with the store first.

05Data retention

We keep your account and recitation history for as long as your account is active, so your Bookmarks and progress stay available to you. Recordings are the exception: they are never retained, so there is nothing separate to delete. Device records are removed when you sign that device out or delete your account.

If you delete your account, we delete your associated personal data, other than records we're required to keep for legal, tax, or fraud-prevention purposes. Deletion is immediate and permanent — we keep no recoverable backup of your account afterwards.

06Children's privacy

Samaa is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.

07Changes to this policy

If we make material changes to this policy, we'll update the date above and, where appropriate, notify you in the app.
